We’ve all been there a few too many times.

It’s not who they really are that we see when we meet a potential love interest, it’s the version they want us to see. Rather than vetting the things right in front of us thoroughly, we get caught up in all the sweet words and kind gestures. By ignoring the vetting process, we often miss things that will reveal their true nature.

You can tell a lot about someone by their actions and behaviors if you pay attention to them. You can uncover things that have always been there if you read between the lines for what they are not saying or doing rather than what they are.

As a result, you’re looking for context clues: things that tell you more about someone than their words or actions. You may want to focus more on their non-verbal communication, their body language, and things that seem alarming.

Let’s take a closer look.

Suppose you just met someone you really like, and everything seems to be going well, but he told you when you first met that he was always punctual to planned events and respected others time, but that hasn’t happened on several of the dates you guys have had together. Each time he arrived late, he had an excuse for not being on time.

Furthermore, when discussing your boundaries and things that are personal to you, his attention is elsewhere and when he does pay attention, he is fidgeting or making jokes. This could indicate that he won’t follow your boundaries or respect your values.

Finally, when you are spending time together and you receive calls, he asks you about your relationship with that person. His actions in this manner indicate that he will take steps to filter the people you communicate with in order to have greater control over your life.

When you are observant and pay attention to the behaviors and actions of a romantic interest in 2024, you can save yourself the time and headache of revealing layers you weren’t aware of, rather than discovering those layers months into a relationship. You can identify red flags that would prevent you from moving forward with a romantic interest during the dating (getting to know) stage.
